How should heavy haul cargo be measured?
Measure the cargo in its exact transport position at the widest, highest and longest points, including attachments, guards, tires, tracks, exhausts and projections. Record verified weight separately. The carrier then combines cargo and trailer geometry to determine loaded dimensions; machine dimensions alone do not represent the permitted vehicle combination.
Does machine weight equal loaded vehicle weight?
No. Permit and bridge analysis can consider the tractor, trailer, jeep, booster, auxiliary equipment and cargo together, plus how the total is distributed across axle groups. Machine operating weight is one input. The completed transport configuration and axle spacings determine the loaded vehicle weights used for routing and permit review.
How does center of gravity affect trailer selection?
Center of gravity affects stability, deck placement, securement, axle loading and loading method. Tall or uneven cargo may require a lower deck, a different support arrangement or component removal. The exact center of gravity and permitted tie-down points should be obtained from engineering or manufacturer documentation when they are not apparent from the machine configuration.
Should removable components be measured separately?
Yes. Document the assembled transport profile and every component proposed for separate shipment. Record each component’s weight, dimensions, lifting points, securement needs and destination handling plan. Separation may reduce the primary load’s permit complexity, but it can add trailers, cranes, labor, inventory control and reassembly requirements.
Why are axle weights required in addition to gross weight?
Road and bridge review considers how weight is distributed, not only the total. Axle-group weights, spacings, tire configuration and vehicle geometry can determine permit eligibility and route feasibility. Provide the proposed tractor, trailer, jeep, booster and cargo placement; a single gross figure cannot establish structural or legal compliance.
