Can ordinary GPS be used for heavy haul routing?

No. Consumer navigation does not validate permitted roads, bridge capacity, vertical clearance, construction, turning geometry, curfews or agency restrictions for an oversize combination. The route must be developed from current jurisdiction data, the actual loaded configuration and permit instructions, with surveys or engineering when the shipment requires them.

What is a heavy haul route survey?

A route survey documents physical and operational constraints along a proposed corridor, such as clearances, bridges, turns, grades, lanes, work zones, utilities, railroad crossings, staging and site access. Survey scope should match the load and jurisdiction. Conditions can change, so the route and verification date must be recorded and reconciled with issued permits.

What happens when an overhead line blocks the route?

The project may require a different route, a reduced loaded height, scheduled utility work or specialized coordination. Never contact or move a line without the utility owner and required authorities. Confirm ownership, clearance, work scope, costs, traffic control and schedule before dispatch; the issued permit alone may not authorize utility handling.

How are construction and temporary closures handled?

Route planning should check current agency notices, permit restrictions, lane widths, detours and project schedules near the planned movement date. Conditions can change after an initial survey. Record the verification date, identify an escalation path and reconcile any detour with the permit authority before deviating from the authorized route.

Why do turns and grades matter for heavy haul routing?

A route can meet bridge and height requirements yet remain infeasible because of turning radius, off-tracking, breakover, grade, traction, shoulder condition or intersection control. Evaluate the full vehicle geometry and operating speed. Field verification, traffic control, alternate staging or a different trailer configuration may be required.
