Securement & Safety
Who develops the cargo securement plan?
The responsible carrier and qualified personnel must select securement that matches the cargo, trailer, anchor points, transport position and applicable rules. Shippers should disclose lifting and tie-down restrictions. Document chains, binders, blocking, friction controls and inspection responsibilities; do not infer safe attachment points from appearance alone.
How often is securement inspected during transport?
Inspection timing depends on applicable regulations, operating conditions and the carrier’s procedures. Securement should be checked before movement and after events that could affect tension or cargo position. The driver must follow governing rules and the approved plan, documenting issues and corrections rather than relying on a single origin inspection.
Can hydraulic components be used as securement points?
Only when the manufacturer or qualified engineering documentation authorizes the specific point and method. Cylinders, hoses, guards and controls may be damaged or may not resist transport forces. Use verified structural tie-down locations, protect sensitive components and place booms, buckets or attachments in the approved transport position.
Why are blocking and cribbing used?
Blocking and cribbing can support cargo, distribute concentrated loads, protect decks, control movement and establish the required transport position. Materials, placement and capacity must match the load and trailer. Verify that supports cannot shift, crush or interfere with securement, axles, tires, steering or unloading operations.
What should happen if securement changes in transit?
Stop at a safe authorized location and follow the carrier’s safety and escalation procedures. Do not continue with shifted cargo, damaged hardware or lost tension. Reinspect the cargo, trailer, anchor points and affected equipment, document the condition and obtain qualified direction before movement resumes.
